Leicester Square. Formerly the open space in the
centre of this square was a well tended ground, its trees
and greenery affording admirable shelter for duellists.
With the decline of the neighbourhood the square depre-
ciated, and until 1851 was used as a dumping ground for
rubbish! The present appearance is due to Albert
Grant, who had the place cleared and properly laid out
at his own personal expense. Hogarth and Reynolds once
lived in Leicester Square.
