VENTURA, CALIFORNIA
It was from these heights that the army of
Castro defeated the army of Carrillo in the
Civil War of 1838. For three days the roar
of artillery was heard. Each side supposed
he was annihilating the other. On the third
night the South, who wanted the capital to
be located in Los Angeles under the gover-
norship of Carrillo, surrendered to the
North, who wanted the capital to be in
Monterey under Alvarado. It was found
only one man was killed and one wounded.
For years this was cattle country and was
only a stopping station on the Camino Real
(royal highway). The first cargo to be
discharged onto the wharf was in February
of 1872. The first newspaper was the
Ventura Signal of April 22, 1871 with J.H.
Bradley as editor..M.P.
