Before My Universe Ends | Justin Lacche | First Edition | 2019
ACT ONE: (Lights up. AUTHOR listens to news reports while holding a postcard in
hand.)
REPORTER: (Off stage.) Ladies and gentlemen, I am very sorry to report that the
last attempt to stop the man-made Cascadia-1974 black hole has failed. All life on
Earth will vanish within seven minutes. In light of these events, we will not be
running our previously scheduled programming. Wishing you all peaceful travels.
Good night. Be well.
AUTHOR: (Takes a deep breath. Begins writing.) I should tell you that seven
minutes isn't even a fraction of enough time to say goodbye. But in truth, I can
probably finish in five minutes flat (chuckles.) I know we had hard times and said
things we both wish we could have taken back. That's life. But what we had. What
we have: It's real. It's stronger than some starving black hole. It's stronger than our
individual selves. I'm writing you this postcard, not because you'll ever read it. It's
because I had the honor of having someone like you in my life to write to as the
entire world comes to an end. It was worth it. All of it. Our laughter. Our pain. Our
child. All of my faults and failings right there for you to see unfiltered. That is real.
That will endure. Even at the quantum level. I fully believe that now.

This black hole is just noise. TheND
tragedy isn't that all life is about to
end. The tragedy is that this black
hole will never know what werknows
And in that respect, I feel sorty for
the black hole -- not anger towards it.
(AUTHOR pauses and looks stage
right. Enter SOULMATE.) Oh... oh...
my god. (Both embrace.) How...
how... did you know I was here?
