County seat of Mono County, a word of obscure meaning applied to the Indians of the area. The county was formed in 1861 from territory taken from Calaveras and Fresno counties. In 1863 the eastern boundary was found to be in Nevada along with the county seat of Aurora. From 1863 to 1870 the boundary lines were changed four times. Today the town is active with ranching and tourist trade. Snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada from the west wall to the valley. The back country has lakes with great fishing and hunting areas.
