The Mayo family has been a professional family since
the 16th century. William Worrall Mayo, born May
31st, 1819 in Manchester, England, first arrived in Min-
nesota in 1855, moving to Rochester in 1863. The in-
spiration of the clinic dates to the time of the cyclone
in 1883, although the first portion of the present build-
ing did not come into being until 1914.
