HARPERS FERRY, W. VA. FROM LOUDOUN HEIGHTS. This view from the Virginia hills looks di-
rectly up the Potomac River with Maryland Heights and the old Chesapeake & Ohio canal to the right
and Harpers Ferry and Bolivar Heights to the left. The quaint town was named for Robert Harper, who
owned 125 acres and operated the first ferry at this point. Due to abundant water power, George Wash-
ington selected the place for a Federal arsenal and gun factory, which gave the town its chief importance
until 1861. In October, 1859, the place sprang into prominence by the capture of John Brown and his band.
