The story is told that the birthday of the United States of
America, July 4, 1776, was a splendid and warm day
during which the temperature, appropriately, rose to
precisely 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Rumors that the
Congress might vote for Independence caused the old
bellman of the Pennsylvania State House, only later
renamed Independence Hall, to station himself in the
steeple. He waited there from the first moment that the
delegates had gathered in the morning. Meanwhile, a
young boy, stationed at the door below, waited to pass on
the news which seemed almost certain. When by
unanimous vote of those then present, the Declaration of
Independence was adopted, the boy below clapped his
hands and shouted, “Ring! Ring!” The old man quickly
responded and with his ringing of what had to that day
been the “Province Bell,” was announced the birth of a
Republic which would be dedicated to liberty and
freedom and destined to play a role in world affairs which
no one could have at that time predicted: the United
States of America. True to the inscription from the Bible
(Leviticus XXV:10), the Bell did “Proclaim liberty
throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof."
