CATALINA ISLAND, CALIFORNIA
Catalina's "Airport in the Sky" was built in 1941 by
blasting away the tops of two adjacent mountains and
filling in the adjoining valley. Located at an elevation of
1,600 feet the Airport in the Sky has a 3,200 foot
blacktop runway. In this aerial postcard view the Palos
Verdes Peninsula on the California mainland may be
seen to the North across 26 miles of blue ocean waters.
