PINECREST LAKE
This mountain lake is located on the Sonora Pass that the
Bidwell-Bartleson party first found in 1841. Some think
that the first white man to have traversed the area was
Jedediah Strong Smith, “Pathfinder of the Sierras.'' who
crossed the Sierras in 1827. The Mono wagon road was
used to haul freight to the Mono diggings in 1857. When
Body discovered ore in Bodie'' in 1859 and the sensational
discovery in Aurora, in 1860, work went on to open the
Sonora Pass wagon road. When it was open, in 1864,
travel over the Mono Trail came to a halt ... M.P.
