世界98国、8,000人の若人の参加する史上最大のスポーツの祭典、
第18回オリンピック競技大会は、1964年10月10日東京国立競技場に
おいて、天皇陛下親臨のもとに開会され、以後10月24日まで15日間、
20種目の競技がこの国立競技場ほか都内および近県30余の競技場で
行われるが、開会式、閉会式ならびに陸上競技の行われる国立競技
場は、古くからスポーツの殿堂として親しまれた東京代々木の“神
宮外苑”にあって、既設のものを増設改築したグランド面積17,000平
方米、スタンド総面積26,000平方米、収容人員72,000人の赤いアン
ツーカのトラックと、緑の芝生のフィールドが美しい一大競技場で
ある。
THE XVIII OLYMPIAD TOKYO 1964
The XVIII Olympic Games commence on October 10, 1964 with
the opening ceremony held in the Imperial presence at the National
Athletic Stadium Tokyo. The Games become the Festival of Sports on
the largest scale in history of Olympiad, having some 8,000 entrants
from 98 countries. The contests of 20 events are carried out for 15 days
in different sites in and around Tokyo.
The National Athletic Stadium, to held there the opening ceremony,
closing ceremony as well as athletic events, is in the outer garden
of the Meiji Shrine at Yoyogi Tokyo, where is familiar to people as
the sanctuary of sports. Old facilities have been reconstructed or
increased and quite changed to a grand stadium worthy to be used for
the main events of the Olympic Games. The orange-coloured en-tout-cas
track and green lawn field would be the best arena for athletes coming
from all parts of the world.
This stadium comprises total area of 26,000 square meters and
seating capacity for 72,000 spectators.
