Hollywood's great outsider, Kubrick moved from
small, rough-edged independent films to lavish
mega-budget spectacles without diminishing his
reputation as the ultimate maverick. From still
photography (as a Look Magazine staffer), he en-
tered cinema with two shoestring thrillers, Fear
and Desire (53) and Killer's Kiss (55). His first
major films--The Killing (56), Paths of Glory (57)
and Spartacus (60)--established him as eccentric
and versatile. A desire for further creative control
led him permanently to England in 1961, where he
gave full reign to his dark humor in Lolita (62) and
Dr. Strangelove (64). From the late sixties, his
careful preparation of projects resulted in ever-
widening gaps between films: 2001: A Space
Odyssey (68), A Clockwork Orange (71), Barry
Lyndon (75), The Shining (80), Ful Metal Jacket
(87) and, completed just before his death at age
70, Eyes Wide Shut (99).
