Additional Details:
Built in the years 1738-34, this pleasant old mansion is the oldest house between Haverhill, on the Merrimac, and the Canadian boundary. The grand old elms, standing so vigorously before it, were planted in the year 1756. Appointed a garrison house in 1739, during the French and Indian Wars, and assigned as the rendesvous for nine families. At that time it was protected by a high stockade of timbers. Here were the offices of the first New Hampshire Legislature, 1783. A fine, well preserved mansion of the Colonial Period.
