This happy occasion was the annual Alfred E. Smith Memorial dinner at the Waldorf Astoria held September, 1960. John Kennedy was not aware that Richard Nixon and Nelson Rockefeller, both republicans, had received special invitations extended by host, Francis Cardinal Spellman.
