Front:
MAJOR JOHN ANDRÉ hung as spy at Tappan. N. Y. Oct. 2. 1780 brought to a stand by John Paulding, Isaac Van Wart and David Williams. André had been commissioned to buy with gold what steel could not conquer : to drive a bargain with one ready for a price to become a traitor. - His remains were afterwards transferred and buried in Westminster Abbey. General Arnold's treason revealed Sept 26. Washington writes, Arnold's conduct is so villan- ously perfidious, that there are no terms that can describe the baseness of his heart.
