Whales on beach, near New Smyrna, Fla.
The school of nine young sperm whales mysteriously came
ashore; four were alive for several hours after they were found.
The whale in front shows eye at top, blow pipe at left near
sand, mouth to right. The large whale to right has been cut
severely by sharks. The men are preparing to cut and boil
the blubber and extract the pure spermaceti oil from the head
cavities. Over 2,000 gals. was extracted. Dimensions, 7 feet
by 8 feet by 40 feet.
