G-16 THE HYSTERICAL PARADE OF THE
SANTA FE (N. M.) FIESTA
The Santa Fe Fiesta was instituted in 1712 by the
Governor Marques de la Penuela to celebrate the re-con-
quest of the city and province by General DeVargas some
sixteen years before. It is today one of the very oldest
community celebrations in America. There is a historical
pageant to celebrate the re-conquest, but the Hysterical
Parade, a humorous affair lampooning almost everything
imaginable, occurs on the last day of the Fiesta. The scene
is, of course, the historical Santa Fe Plaza, the end of the
Santa Fe Trail.
