Hurricane Hugo originated September 11, 1989 as a tropical wave off the coast of Africa. Two days later it pounded Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands and headed straight for the South Carolina Coast. During the night and early morning hours of September 21 and 22nd, the 300 year old city of Charleston, South Carolina, was forever changed by the 135 mph winds that came ashore.
