Built by AMERICAN LOCOMOTIVE COMPANY, this J-3-A Hudson
type 4-6-4 locomotive is one of 50—including 10 streamliners
-delivered to the New York Central Railroad. The order,
when placed, was the largest ever given for completely
equipped roller bearing steam power units.
Designed for speeds over 100 miles per hour, the new stainless
steel streamliner develops probably the highest sustained power,
based upon its weight, and operates at a greater peak of effici.
ency than any other engine of its type ever built. Weighing
365,500 pounds, this American Locomotive generates 4,730
maximum horsepower.
