The Hopis make their homes in terraced houses, which usually rise to the height of three stories, and which are arranged irregularly on the long, parallel streets of the pueblo. No door opens upon a wide veranda to welcome a visitor to a Hopi home; instead he ascends a ladder to the first terrace where he may find the members of the household making pottery or baskets or resting in the sun, but where the welcome is quite as sure. Ladders also lead from the first to the second terrace, and others to the third. The rooms on the ground are for the storage of corn, pumpkins, watermelons, and dried peaches. Above are the living rooms.
