1994 BPC38 Benham Limited Edition of 2,500 There are many stories about golf being played on the links at Troon long before the recognised golf course came into being on this beautiful stretch of Ayrshire coastline. The course lies at the southern end of a long run of duneland from Irvine to Prestwick. In Ian Mackintosh's history of the club he presents evidence for a course of four or five holes here as early as 1870, and that these were cut with a knife and 'were neither round nor square, but were large enough.' The present club was not formed until 1878 when the prospective members met for the first time to make their plans in a local hostelry - The Portland Arms. The occasion was led by James Dickie from Paisley, a town on the outskirts of Glasgow. Royal Troon has been host to the Open Championship on six occasions.
