Golf has been played on the Old Course at St Andrews for
more than 400 years. The Old Course is unique because
over the centuries it has been sculpted by weather and tide
and owes little to the hand of man. There are only four
single greens on the Old Course, the ist, the 9th, the famous
17th and the Home Hole, the 18th. The first tee is
immediately in front of the big window of the Royal and
Ancient clubhouse and has a reputation for being the most
nerve-wracking for openers anywhere. The final fairway is
approached by way of the little bridge over Swilcan Burn
and affords the most famous view in golf
. On the left looking
towards the clubhouse is the wide stretch of the West Sands -
made famous by the opening titles from the film 'Chariots of
Fire' - sweeping away towards the Eden Estuary. To the
right is the ancient town of St Andrews, home to both the
game of golf and Scotland's most ancient university.
