Zebra. (Equus zebra.)
The Zebra is an animal of the Horse family, beauti-
fully marked with stripes, and has a short mane, erect
ears, and tail like that of the ass. It was formerly believed
that it was impossible to break the Zebra to harness, but
quite recently it has been proved that the animal can be
trained. At one time, great herds of these animals lived
in the mountains of Cape Colony, but now they are greatly
reduced in numbers.
