New York City-Home of Chester A. Arthur. Chester
A. Arthur, twenty-first President of the United States, was
born in Fairfield, Vt., on Oct. 5th, 1830. He was graduated
from Union College in 1848, and married Ellen Lewis
Herndon in 1859. Arthur was genial in disposition, and
his domestic life happy. As Vice-President, he succeeded
to the Presidency by the death of Garfield on Sept. 19th,
1881. He died suddenly at his New York residence on
Nov. 18th, 1886, having outlived his wife six years.
