Destroyed by the Americans 1778. Rebuilt by the English 1782. Surrendered by the English and garrisoned by the US 1796. Captured and destroyed by the English Fleet under Admiral Yeo 1814. Rebuilt of earth and timber by US 1839-1842. Rebuilt of stone and concrete by US 1863-1870. Post enlarged and built of brick by US 1903-1905.
