One of the Country's earliest versions of the popular western spectacle, the rodeo, as today practiced is credited to Pecos. It is said that here in 1884, the foreman of several ranches conducted a Forth of July celebration that included roping, racing, and riding contests for the hands of local ranches, whose owners made up the purses; no admission was charged. This first known Texas rodeo was so successful that it became an annual affair.
