PECOS, TEXAS
One of the country's earliest versions of the pop-
ular western spectacle, the rodeo, as today prac-
ticed is credited to Pecos. It is said that here in
1884, the foreman of several ranches conducted
a Forth of July celebration that included roping,
racing, and riding contests for the hands of local
ranches, whose owners made up the purses; no
admission was charged. This first known Texas
rodeo was so successful that it became an annual
affair.
