THE SQUARE, SHOWING MORGAN
MONUMENT. The Square is surrounded by attractive
public buildings and contains the imposing Morgan Monument;
this monument was erected to the memory of Daniel Morgan,
an American soldier (1736-1802) who was named "Hero of
Cowpens'', on account of the service he rendered on the
Revolutionary battlefield of the Cowpens, nine miles beyond
Spartanburg; the battle was fought Jan. 17th, 1781, and re-
sulted in the defeat of the British under Tarleton.
