The square is surrounded by attractive public buildings and contains the imposing Morgan Monument; erected to the memory of Daniel Morgan, an American soldier (1736-1802) who was named "Hero of Cowpens", on account of the service he rendered on the Revolutionary battlefield of the Cowpens, - nine miles beyond Spartanburg; the battle was fought Jan. 17th, 1781, and resulted in the defeat of the British under Tarleton.
