A State Normal School has been located in Salem since 1854. Until 1896 it occupied the brick building at the corner of Summer and Broad Streets. The new building erected in 1893-1896 is at the junction of Lafayette Street and Loring Avenue. It covers a ground area of 11,000 square feet. The architect was J. Philip Rinn of Boston and the cost was $200,000.
