Mt. Maunganui is the surf beach of Tauranga. 761 feet in height, for 100 years a Maari tribe resistd all attacks on their strongly fortified pa. The village of Maketu on the heartland had 10,000 Maaris living there at the time of Capt. Cook's arrival, and is one of the oldest settlements on the Bay of Plenty, N.Z. Photography: Gladys M.
