The 200 mile sea route between Lyttelton and Wellington is one of the most important highways in New Zealand. At Wellington, vehicles are driven through a linkspan and through the stern doorway to their parking places and passengers go to their berths. In the morning they drive off ready for journeys through the South Island. Although this is one of the cheapest forms of public transport in New Zealand and the sea journey is short, the two ferries have the size and comfort of ocean going liners.
