MINERS AT THE HOMESTAKE GOLD MINE,
Lead, S.D., are transported to their working places
by means of huge hoists like this one at the Yates
Hoist Room. The cone-shaped drums on these
electric-powered giants measure 16-feet long,
25-feet in diameter on the large end and 12-feet
in diameter on the small end. The steel hoisting
cable measures 1 7/8 inches in diameter. Thirty-six
men can be hoisted from the 5,000-foot level to
the surface in approximately 3 minutes.
