THE STORY OF THE SLOC MASCOTS
The Mascots have been created to continue
to tell the story of the Salt Lake Games and are
based on our culture. The Mascot story begins
with our Native American ancestry long ago.
The inspiration was the 2,000-vear-old etchings
found in the desert canyon walls. Our first
known artists created the marks and explained
the stories behind them in Native American
legends and myths. These legends echo the
Olympic Motto of "Gitius, Altius, Fortius" ("Swifter,
Higher, Stronger").
The hare was swifter; the covote reached
higher; the bear was stronger. The Salt Lake
2002 Mascots hOnor the history of the Games
and the culture of the land.
Swifter
"Once the sun was burning up the
carth. The harec ran swiftly to the top
of the mountain. Shooting her arrow
at the sun, she dropped it lower in
the sky and cooled the land."
Higher
"Covote ascended to the highest
places of the land. When the world
furned dark and frozen, the covote
climbed the highest mountaintop and
stole flame from the fire peoplc. He
brought warmth back to the earth."
MASCO
ICIAL
Stronger
"Long ago brave hunters left their
villages to frack the bear. The bear
was foo strong and outlasted the
hunters. Sons of the hunters continue
the chase and can be seen in the
SALT LAKE 2002
night sky."
