MEMORIAL MURAL OF THE “CHALLENGER” CREW
Honoring the seven heroic crew members of the space shuttle
“Challenger”, a commemorative mural adorns the Brumidi
Corridor of the Capitols Senate Wing. Following a competi-
tion directed by the Senate Commission on Art and Antiquities,
artist Charles Schmidt of the faculty of Temple University was
selected to execute the mural. The “Challenger” Memorial
is one of the most recent works of art to grace the Capitol
Corridors. It captures the courage and the eagerness of true
American pioneers of the space age, who braved the unknown
to further mankind's knowledge of the universe.
