THE BOSTON STONE GIFT SHOP
This structure was originally a paint mill imported about
1700 by a painter, Thomas Child. The "Boston Stone,!'
shown to the right of the doorway, was later used as a
landmark or central point from which distances from Boston
were measured. This is the exact center of Old Boston.
EAST INDIA TRADING CO. Owned and occupied in 1660
by William Courser, First Town Crier of Boston; in 1737
by James Davenport, brother-in-law of Benjamin Franklin
and from 1764 to 1785 by John Hancock. The Continental
Troops were paid here in 1779. It is the oldest brick
building in Boston now standing.
