UNION PACIFIC 8444
The big class FEF-3 Northern type locomotive was built in 1944 during World War II as
the road needed additional power for the war effort. Troops were moved across the
country and the Union Pacific played a large part in this traffic. 8444, as number 844,
the last UP Northern and the last UP steam locomotive built, saw service through its
career in both the traditional black and passenger gray colors. These Northerns were
painted in this Overland gray scheme starting in 1946 for service on such trains as the
Los Angeles Limited. After about six years the fleet was repainted to the standard
black we are all accustomed to. 844 was the power on excursions in 1958 as well as on
freights after being downgraded in its later years of service. Decades of excursion
service resulted for this Northern and in 1987 the locomotive was repainted into the
classic gray scheme as seen here in Cheyenne, Wyo. September 16, 1988.
