RIO GRANDE ZEPHYR
The Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad winds through some of the most beau-
tiful country in the USA, the Rocky Mountains. One of the best ways to see the
natural beauty of the area between Denver and Salt Lake City is to take the rail-
road operated “Rio Grande Zephyr". The train operates three times weekly with
sightseeing dome cars and diner. Pictured is the “Zephyr” passing through Plain-
view, co on July 7, 1977 with a full complement of five dome cars, the rear car
including lounge and observation. The “Rio Grande Zephyr" is a truncated version
of the “California Zephyr”, the Chicago-Oakland, CA luxury train last operated in
March 1970. Although the “Rio Grande Zephyr" is a day train, it retains much of
the class of its predecessor drawing patrons from near and far.
