LOAFING ALONG BY SUGARLOAF
By Charles H. L. Johnston
Where bold Catoctin rears its peak,
Where rolls the broad Monocacy,
Where soaring buzzards quiet seek,
And mockers swing from bending tree;
With droning motor—through the glade,
We drift where Braddock's army pressed,
And cooled by evening's gathering shade,
We drowse beneath the mountain's crest.

Loafing along by Sugarloaf,
Drone of the engine lulls the ear,
Loafing along by Sugarloaf,
Sombre hoot of the owl comes near,
Loafing along by Sugarloaf,
The Harvest Moon is smiling down,
On jagged peaks of Sugarloaf,
Old Sugarloaf, near Fredericktown.
