The old Hilo Hotel, situated on the site of King
Kalakaua's "summer palace", was built in 1888
with 10 rooms and 2 baths. It was torn down in
1955 and replaced with a more modern build-
ing which retained the charm of the original
and remains a landmark in downtown Hilo.
