Tom Sawyer watches John Briggs whitewash the fence
at the Mark Twain Home in Hannibal, Missouri. Sam
Clemens lived here when a boy, and drew upon his
own true-life experiences to write "The Adventures
of Tom Sawyer." A sign before the fence says that
Tom persuaded his gang to pay him for the privilege
of whitewashing the fence, and then sat by and 23
that it was well done. It is the most famous
incident in all of American literature.
