Arkansas "The Land Of Opportunity" Discovered by the Spaniard De Soto in 1541. Marquette and Joliet visited here in 1673 and La Salle took possession for France in 1682. With the purchase of the Louisiana Territory Arkansas became American in 1803. the Arkansas Territory was organized in 1819., and admitted to the Union as a state in 1836.
