THE NATIONAL GALLERY OF ART. By an Act of
Congress on March 24, 1937, the National Gallery of Art
was established. The building cost $15,000,000 and was
erected with the funds given by the late Andrew W.
Mellon. The collections include Mr. Mellon's private col-
lection of Art which he also gave to the Gallery, and that
of Mr. Samuel H. Kress of New York who gave to the
nation a collection of 375 paintings and 18 pieces of
sculpture.
