Altitude of a hot air balloon is controlled by the amount of heat applied to the tons of air contained within the bag. This balloon, a Raven S-50, burns propane gas in dual burners to heat the 60,000 cubic feet of air within the envelope. A special "HOO-HOO" or maneuvering valve can be opened at the equator of the envelope if the balloonist wishes to descend, venting hot air and decreasing the lift.
