Restoration of the silver mining town of Calico, located just east of Barstow, California, is the finest of any ghost town in the West. The town-site and nearby mining claims were purchased in 1950 by Walter Knott, of Knott's Berry Farm, whose uncle in 1881 grubstaked the miners who made the great silver discovery. In 1966 the Knott family, having rebuilt most of the old town to its original glory, deeded everything to the County of San Bernardino. Mike Roberts |
