MARK TWAIN - BRET HARTE TRAIL
Mark Twain Cabin on Jackass Hill
Stopping place of packers carrying supplies to the mines, often as many as 200 Jackasses were "parked" on the hill over night, furnishing a concert sug-
gesting the name "Jackass Hill." Very coarse gold was found here, 100 square feet of ground yielding $10,000.00. Quartz found here contained three-
fourths of its total weight in gold. Steve and Bill Gillis, as well as Dick Stoker, the 'Dick Baker of "Roughing It," were Mark Twain's cronies. Mark
Twain wrote here "The Jumping Frog of Calaveras" from notes made at Angel's Camp Tavern.
