MORRO ROCK
Morro (Sp., headland) Rock rises 576 feet above the
bay of Morro Bay. The rock is a great pile of
trachyte (volcanic rock) covering 40 acres. Gaspar
de Portola's expedition camped here on Sept. 8, 1769
after a day of shooting bears on the banks of Chorro
Creek. While the bay has not been a shipping point
a great number of fishing boats stop here on their
way north and again south. Very little history has
been recorded about Morro, but this was a land of
great Ranchos. Morro Rock is one of a chain that
extends to San Luis Obispo. Today there is a large
art colony that shows their work here. While this is
a resort town it is more quiet than most . . . M.P.
