Description:

Building believed to have been designed by the notable architect Robert Mills and built in 1822. this county seat was gradually moved from Jacksonboro where a fire destroyed over half of the homes in 1796. Walterboro was first named Ireland Creek, but two citizens, Walter and Smith, each insisted the town be named for him. Dispute ended by a tree-felling contest won by Walter.
