Additional Details:
Dock Landing of the Clermont. The Clermont, the first boat propelled by steam, required 32 hours to go to Albany from New York City-about 150 miles. The fare was $7, and freight was carried at the rate of three cents a pound. Plying the same route on the Hudson today are palatial steamboats, more than three times the size, carrying 2000 passengers and making the trip easily in ten hours.
