THE MOTHER LODE COUNTRY OF CALIFORNIA
amestown also called Jimtown. The first gold discovered
in Tuolumne County was west of here on Woods Creek,
by James Wood. This was shortly before the town was
founded by Colonel George James, August 8, 1848. Mil-
lions in gold were taken from the streams and gulches
and by the large mines during the "Gold Rush."
