The history of Shepherd College began when
the County Seat of Jefferson County was
moved from Shepherdstown to Charlestown in
1871. The people of Shepherdstown and vicin-
ity decided to use the vacated court house
for educational purposes and appointed Prof.
Joseph McMurran First Principal of the In-
stitution, which opened Sept. 2, 1871 as
Shepherd College.
