Additional Details:
Hampton Coal Breaker, Formerly the coal was carried out of the mines in small cars hauled by mules. Now the power is furnished by electric motors; when the coal reaches the surface, it is passed through a breaker, which reduces it into various sizes--from the largest lumps to what is known as "rice". There are 30 anthracite coal mines and 58 mining companies within the city limits.
