Jackson Square, the Place d'Armes of "Old
Orleans," scene of the most stirring events of
the city's history. Here the United States for
mally received title from France. Here Lafayette
was feted in 1826. The historic St. Louis Ca-
thedral was erected 1718 by Don Almonaster Y.
Roxas, a wealthy Spaniard, who donated it to
the parish. Rebuilt 1720, present building 1794.
Cabildo contains a splendid museum of art, his.
toric items and antiques. The State Historical
Museum contains important documents and
books.
